When Brad and I got married during my "pre-couponing" life, I always thought that buying generic was a way to save money. Just today at the grocery store I saw a family with a cart loaded with generic products. This got me to thinking...I don't purchase generic products as much as I used to. Turns out that "buying" name brand saves us more money. Here is why...
1. They never have coupons for generic items. This in itself pretty much eliminates any chance of us buying a generic product. However, we always do compare prices...using a coupon for a name brand vs. buying the generic brand. Most times the coupon/name brand combo wins out.
2. Stores tend to put the name brand products on sale more regularly than their generic counterparts. Get a good coupon match-up and BINGO!
3. Brad and I stock up on certain products when they are on sale and we have a coupon to match up. This is why we never purchase...toothpaste, toothbrushes, bodywash, shower gel, hand soap, detergant, fabric softener, dish soap, cleaning supplies...you get the idea ;)
So, next time you go to pick up that generic product, keep in mind that buying the name brand product with a coupon is very often the better buy!
